Book Review:
One of the things that I liked most about this book was its characters. If you like characters with a lot of depth, then you should definately read this. The book's characters have very harsh background stories. When Kurt and Elizabeth died, five years of secrets and lies died with them. I love books that show people as wearing masks that you have to uncover. I also like the theme that this story has. It says that sometimes, when people are under a mask of lies, it is better to let people keep on believing them. Shay wanted to save June a lot of pain by letting her believe her husbands lies. If he had told her, she would be more broken than she already is.

I also liked the conflicts. The conflict of June hating Shay is very strange. She will not accept the one thing that could save her daughter, because she hates him so much. Only, after thinking about it, she thinks that if she kills Shay that she will get her revenge. I like how Jodi Picoult really shows what these characters are thinking, and how she dives into their pasts. This helps the conflicts really stand out. If you like to have the character's problems stated right out in the beginning, then you'd hate this book. Jodi Picoult loves to make you guess about these character's pasts. That is what I love about her writing.
